B.C. Renaissance Capital Fund

The B.C. Renaissance Capital Fund Ltd. (the “Renaissance Fund”) is a crown corporation that is administered by the provincial Ministry of Technology, Trade and Economic Development. Since December 2007, the Renaissance Fund has made capital commitments totalling $90 million with 6 venture capital fund managers, each of whom has a proven track record of investing successfully in one or more 4 key technology sectors: information technology, digital media, life sciences and clean technology.

Investment Capital Programs

The Ministry of Technology, Trade and Economic Development offers 3 key programs to help small businesses in B.C. access capital for business start-up and expansion:

  1. Venture Capital Program 

  2. Employee Share Ownership Program

  3. Labour Sponsored Funds Program 

Tax credits offered under the Small Business Venture Capital Act and the Employee Investment Act have the capacity to support up to $185 million of investment capital annually and are designed to support continuous access to early-stage venture capital for small businesses. New tax credits, announced during Budget 2008, will help to stimulate the development of clean technologies by B.C. companies.
