Online Study Guide for the
Millwright Apprenticeship
The Online Study Guide is a resource
for immigrants who need specific language skills to gain a trades
credential in Canada. The Study Guide provides an overview of the
first-year Millwright Apprenticeship training, including reference
to Work Practices, Tools, Trade Science, Equipment, and Welding
terms and concepts. Immigrants with a trades or technical
background can use the Online Study Guide to master the language
need to explain their trades knowledge effectively in English.
Immigrants with a trades or technical
background are currently being offered free access to the Online
Study Guide for the Millwright Apprenticeship. An internet
connection is required to access the website, and a high-speed
service is recommended to facilitate the downloading of media
files. To receive a log-on and password to the website visit

Occupation-specific ESL Curriculum
Project
The pilot is a one-year initiative to
develop, pilot and assess the delivery of occupation focused ESL
curriculum in the five BC Skills Connect for Immigrants targeted
sectors (construction, transportation, energy, tourism/hospitality,
and health). The curriculum has been developed using the Canadian
Language Benchmarks (CLB) and involves a consortia of post-secondary
institutions.

IEN Registered Nurses
Post-Licensure Employment Project
Over a period of 26 months, this project will
recruit, assess, hire and integrate 44 registered IENs into acute
care sites in VCH - Vancouver Hospital, Richmond Hospital, UBC
Hospital, St. Paul’s and Mount St. Joseph’s Hospitals. This will be
achieved through an Integrated Bridging Program (IBP) comprised of
three key activities: targeted recruitment, prior learning and
clinical competency assessment, and a 16-week extended new nurse
orientation. This project will adapt and use existing prior learning
assessment (PLAR) and clinical competency assessment tools,
including the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN),
and IEN refresher modules offered by KUC; and it will provide
English language tutors, nurse mentors and clinical educators to
support newly hired IENs and their departments/units during the
extended orientation. This project is designed from other successful
VCH new nurse supported-entry programs, such as the New Nurse
Graduate Program.
The project was launched in
partnership with:
IEN Licensed Practical Nurse
Transition Program
This project will identify and recruit
underemployed IENs currently working in Vancouver Coastal Health
care settings, including acute, long term care and home support, and
those currently working in privately paid home support. Recruitment
will involve developing outreach materials, liaising with key
stakeholders and delivering information sessions. Interested
individuals will then be assessed to determine if they meet the
project criteria. Selected individuals will participate in a 4 week
workplace English language program before taking part in a 6 month
full-time transition program for IENs wishing to become LPNs. Prior
to enrolling in the transition program participants will be assessed
using a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) tool to
determine clinical and theoretical gaps in their training and
experience. After the completion of the transition program, the
participants will take both the Canadian English Language Benchmark
Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) test and the Canadian Practical Nurse
Registration Examination (CPNRE). Participants will then enter a
four-month workplace practice and mentorship program to assist them
to translate theory into clinical practice in a workplace setting
and, thereby, enhance their ability to meet the criteria for entry
to practice new graduate LPNs, and gain employment in nursing.
The project was launched in
partnership with:
Enhancing the “Graduate Nurses
English as an Additional Language” (GNEAL) Program
GNEAL is a
unique refresher program for internationally educated nurses (IENs)
in that it has English language courses integrated throughout the
three semester program, as well as nursing theory, clinical
practice, and a sociology course focusing on the Canadian health
care system. Each year Kwantlen admits 63 IENs to this program and
on average has 60 graduates annually. The graduates have a 99%
success rate on the Canadian Registered Nurse Examinations (CRNE).
The following four projects are intended to build on the successes
of the GNEAL program.
- Staff Orientation to Internationally Educated Nurses
(IENs)
The aim of this project is to
provide nursing staff with strategies to support the integration of
IENs onto the unit and to help them better understand the IENs
challenges.
- Graduate Nurse English as an Additional Language
Re-Entry Program: Alternative Online Delivery Pilot
This project involves
delivering components of the Nursing and English GNEAL program
through online mechanism. Web-base courses will be developed by
faculty with teaching release to complete the work.
The project was launched in
partnership with:
Feasibility Analysis for the
Creation of a Bridging Program for Internationally Trained Medical
Radiography Technologists (Phase 1)
This project
will provide an in-depth review to determine the number of potential
applicants that would benefit from a bridging program for
Internationally-Trained Medical Radiography Technologists. The
research would assess the potential applicant pool, their training
needs and expectations, and review these questions from the
perspective of each Health Authority.
