Workplace assessment, Language and Bridging
Initiatives (2002-2006)
This pilot intends to enhance the
access and success of internationally trained trades persons
applying for apprenticeship and writing trades qualification
examinations. The pilot will identify best practices related to
successful assessment strategies; identify linkages with related
national/provincial level initiatives; make recommendations for
appropriate responses to the needs of internationally-trained trades
persons in four areas: electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and
carpentry; and, identify resources required to benchmark trades
credentials against Canadian standards.
The project was launched in
partnership with:
Bridge to Your Future – To develop specific tools: an
employment readiness assessment; an employment and program
assistance matrix and a "Passport to Work" that summarizes the
immigrant’s personal employment goals.
Experiential Dietetic Practice
Pilot
This project delivers a coordinated
workplace practice opportunity for foreign-trained Dietitians to
gain the required 500 hours Canadian work experience to qualify for
licensure in BC.
Dietetic Canadian Experience Program
This pilot was launched in

Foreign Trained Nurses Cultural Orientation Pilot
This initiative intended to prepare
internationally trained nurses to write the Canadian Registered
Nurses Exam required for all nursing professionals seeking entrance
into the profession.
This pilot was launched in

Immigrants and the World of
Work
This pilot intends publish 12,000
copies of a booklet that contains a series of previously published
articles addressing common employment issues facing immigrants. The
booklet will be produced in the following languages: English,
Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Punjabi, Korean, and Russian.
This pilot was launched in

Internationally Trained
Engineers Pilot
This pilot intends to develop a
service model that will help internationally trained engineers in
their efforts to become integrated into the engineering workplace
and registered as professionals. The components of the pilot
include: a professional work experience and training component for
foreign-trained newcomers; a policies and procedures review for the
regulatory body; and the enhancement of information services to
improve understanding of international qualifications issues and the
realities of the job market.
A fourth component of the pilot
includes an independent assessment to determine whether the
objectives were met and whether the overall approach and initiatives
are applicable to the broader International Qualifications Program.

Language Assessment Tool for
the Nursing Profession
This initiative will result in the
development of a valid and reliable task-based assessment tool to
measure the language skills of foreign trained nurses. The tool is
expected to benefit nursing colleges, licensing bodies and health
care employers by offering them an accurate picture of the English
language abilities of foreign-trained nurse’s intent on practicing
the Profession in Canada.

Pilot
This pilot will support the
development of three registration qualifying courses, an IELTS
preparation module, clinical guidelines, and the conversion of these
courses/modules for web delivery.

EASI Initiative
The project was composed of several
phases to develop an employment-focused internet portal for
immigrants, employers and service providers in BC.
