In response
to concerns about potential skills shortages resulting from increased
demand for workers due to the 2010 Winter OIympic Games, a multi-stakeholder
committee was formed with representatives from the federal and provincial
governments (Ministries of Labour and Citizens' Services, Human Resources,
Advanced Education, Bid Secretariat, and Human Resources Development Canada)
along with Tourism BC, First Nations, the Vancouver Agreement, the 2010
Bid Corporation and the Vancouver Dowtown Eastside community.
This committee is
working with industry and other stakeholder groups to develop plans to
address the skills gaps, and maximize employment, skill development and
volunteer opportunities resulting from the 2010 Games and other capital
projects. When the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games is established,
this work will be forwarded to them for consideration in the pre-Games
preparation. This work can also be integrated into other labour market
planning activities of the provincial and federal governments, education
and training institutions, First Nations, and industry sectors.
Six reports from
this committee have been released, all of which can be downloaded for
free. (Note: all documents are in pdf format)
